On Wednesday we took a day trip back to the British Isles, or at least as far as Jersey. It was a very early start, which meant we missed breakfast in the hotel. However, on the plus side we did get a cooked breakfast on the ferry which included a quorn veggie sausage. A bit of a change from croissants, cheese and jam.
The crossing to Jersey takes an hour and twenty minutes by Condor Ferries. The wind was still strong resulting in a rough crossing. William barely noticed but a number of other children were sick, and clearly relieved to get back on dry land.
As you’ve probably gathered by now, our itinerary on the island was largely set by William, so our first excursion was to the wildlife park. This proved very interesting; and it was reassuring to learn that the park was heavily involved in a number of conservation initiatives across the world to protect natural habitats and local animal populations.
Our return to St. Helier was later than planned, giving us insufficient time to visit the war tunnels. However, we settled for a trip by road train around the bay to St. Aubin. This not only enabled us to see some of the historic sites but was accompanied by an interesting commentary outlining some of Jersey’s history. Not surprisingly, the Nazi occupation featured highly; and it was quite moving to learn about the island’s liberation some eleven months after D-Day. A special statue to commemorate that day stands in what is known today as Liberation Square.
We caught the ferry back to St.Malo in the early evening….and headed straight to the bar.
